. B A C K G R O U N D .

History: Raised in an aristocrat home by aristocrat parents and growing up with aristocrat friends, Nikolas was provided with all he could ever need to live a comfortable life of luxury. But he was unhappy--or rather, bored. Boredom was his worst enemy, and as a child, he got into no end of trouble in his ventures to escape his cozy inner-circle mansion in favor of exploring the city where common folk lived. He hated the idea of growing up and becoming like his father, a wealthy businessman who did nothing every day except go to meetings and count his money. So, after twelve long, boring years of attending the Scholars Academy for Business, Nikolas dropped out of school, much to his parents' extreme disapproval, and instead enlisted in the Cadwallader, later graduating an army officer (which his parents didn't mind so much, though they worried for his safety).

It was during his first year stationed in Rithika that he met Azazel, a highly skilled engineer who worked on airships in Portplace, Rithika's primary harbor. In need of a good engineer himself and finding Zel's company and witty humor enjoyable, upon discovering he was a Gilder, Nikolas threatened to out him and make sure he ended up in a slave market somewhere if he didn't come with him and join his own airship crew. After a brief skirmish in which Nikolas had to disarm Zel to keep from getting shot, Zel reluctantly agreed and returned to Arcadia with Nikolas at the end of Nik's term in Rithika. It took several years and a few situations in which they had to rely heavily on one another before they began to trust each other. It helped that Nik let Zel keep his freedom and never treated him as a slave, despite their constant fighting.

Zel was Nik's doorway into the Underground. Nik is still unaware of Zel's status as one of the Faceless and only knows he's part of the resistance. However, the more freely he began to speak of his disdain for Arcas and the suspicious disappearances around the city, the more Zel prodded him to open up about his real thoughts concerning the government in place, until he felt sure that Nik could be trusted with the knowledge of the entrance to the Underground. Of course, the Cornerstone was more than hesitant to trust any Dathan and refused to allow him further involvement than simply being among the refugees, and so Nik began providing them with useful information on his own, becoming more and more determined that this was something he wanted to be a part of. Zel likes to tease him about a little bird, which Nikolas detests because he wants to be assigned a more prestigious and important position, but he figures gathering information is better than nothing.

Personality: Nikolas is extremely arrogant, as Dathans tend to be. He has a way of seeing non-Dathans as being below him, and even Zel is no exception, though Nikolas likes him despite that he's "lesser." He even turns his nose up at some other Dathans--those who panic when their personal maid gets sick and they have to dress themselves and wash their own clothes and cook their own food. Even though he's an aristocrat, Nikolas is a do-it-yourselfer. This might be partially because of his rather short attention span that leaves him feeling restless if he sits still too long. He's a thrill-seeker, and wherever he happens to be stationed, he always looks into the local extreme hobbies available at the first opportunity. When he's not being an arrogant prick, he's generally open to good conversation, which will probably involve all array of insults and arguments, but if you can survive that, he's not hard to win over. He loves a clever sense of humor.

Appearance: Nikolas dresses to fit his personality (though not necessarily on purpose). He only wears the finest materials and goes to great lengths to keep them from getting torn or dirty, which unfortunately happens quite often. When it does, he throws them away, or gives them to Zel or someone else who might be able to do something with them, and buys something new for himself. He is always well-groomed, every blonde strand of wavy hair in place, and he becomes easily irritated if he goes more than a day without shaving. Even when out in the desert, he does his best to go in style.
